PowerWatch™ Benchmark

A Benchmark is different from a Baseline.

A Baseline is a record of your own historical performance.

A Benchmark provides you with an indication of your performance relative to that of others.

PowerWatch™ provides you with Benchmark information and shows you how you are performing relative to all the other PowerWatch™ customers and applicable local and international standards.

Let's take commercial buildings to illustrate how Benchmarking works in PowerWatch™.  The following are examples of some of the more widely used Benchmarks available for commercial buildings.

  • ASHRAE standards (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers).
  • SAEDES (The South Africa Energy and Demand Efficiency Standard)
  • SABS standards and guidelines.

In addition, all of the buildings that form part of the PowerWatch™ client-base will be monitored and Benchmarked by the PowerWatch™ Control Centre.

Each PowerWatch™ building is able to see how they compare to the rest of the buildings in the PowerWatch™ database.  Values such as

  • kWh/square meter of conditioned floor space,
  • kVA/square meter of conditioned floor space,
  • Total percentage reduction relative to Baseline,

is shown against the following Benchmarks - my building, all buildings on PowerWatch™, ASHRAE standard, SAEDES standard and SABS standard.

In the case of industrial facilities or mines, the same benchmarking exercise can be achieved by comparing various shafts, plants, and facilities against each other.  All comparisons are completely anonymous - you can see yourself against a group of others but nobody knows who the others are or what a specific site or facility's consumption is.
